This spring, the quiz bowl teams have been competing in several meets. The high school team (pictured above, L to R) consists of (First Row) Isabella Seitz, Luke Hunzeker, and Dylan Layne. (Second Row) Emalyse Gottula, Kinsley Benson, and Kailey Hartman. The junior high team (pictured below, L to R) consists of Aubrey Sisco, Riley Strehle, Sophia Sunneberg, and Vanessa Gottula.
When asked about the meets this season, Coach Robertson responded, "Overall, I feel that the teams performed well. We made it into more tournaments than last year, and with the high school team, we scored more points than in previous years, with many matches coming down to one question." Each team usually attends three meets in a season.
Mr. Robertson went on to say that Luke and Kailey performed exceptionally, answering the majority of questions during a match for the HS team, just like Aubrey and Sophia did for the JH team. "But overall, I was pleased with everyone's performance this year. All of the return players improved, and all the new members were able to contribute to the team."
Coach commented on what they could improve for next year. "One of the things that hurt us more than anything else was the speed of the buzzers, so that is definitely something we will need to work on next year. We would often know the answers to the questions, but the other team would buzz in first."
He mentioned that the team selection is just whoever shows up. If he has enough for multiple teams, he splits them based on performance in practice. He tries to practice 3 times a week before school for 20-30 minutes each time, and their practice usually consists of reviewing questions from previous quiz bowl competitions. If he notices a weakness in a category, they will focus on that. This year, some of the kids were focused on studying Mythology.
