On March 30, the Pawnee City High School band and choir travel to Johnson-Brock for the MUDECAS Music Contest. Both of the groups performed very well.
When asked about their performances, Kailey Hartman, who is a junior, replied, “Overall, for all of our performances, I think we did well, but there was room to improve.” She also stated that her favorite song to play in band is “Pentagram.” Mrs. Veleba was extremely happy with the band’s performance; they earned a superior rating from all three judges.
Delaney Rottman performed in a duet, full choir, and girls’ glee. She shared that her favorite song to sing is her duet, “Paper of Pins,” because it is very upbeat. Mrs. Dieckgrafe, the vocal director at Pawnee City, mentioned that her favorite song to conduct is “I Will Sing You the Stars,” because it is a beautiful song about future hopes and dreams.
The band and choir students had to adapt to playing at a different school. Mrs. Veleba said that playing in a gym with someone else’s percussion instruments makes it hard to control volume. Delaney noted that it was slightly difficult to adapt to a different gym because it echoed differently. Mrs. Dieckgrafe commented, “It wasn’t too bad. We were lucky to perform on a stage in the old gym, which gave us a similar feeling to performing at home.”
In response to how they will prepare for the upcoming music contest, Mrs. Dieckgrafe responded, “We’re going to work on expressivity and dynamics.”
Delaney added, “I’ll be working on my volume to prepare for the District contest, because I need to sing louder.”
On April 20, the band and choir groups will head to Johnson County Central in Tecumseh to compete in the District music contest.
