On February 12, I interviewed Heidi Koster about the Old Guys Brew Coffee Shop in the town square. The coffee shop is a social place to be, a great place to relax, to gather, and build local connections. It is owned by Mrs. Koster, Dennis Husa, Keri Crosby, and Chuck Rathbun. When asked why she had started it, she responded, “Being part of a small community, Old Guys Brew Coffee wants to work with other small businesses in an effort to provide additional options/outlets for locals.”
Mrs. Koster was also asked what it is like to own her own business, what her favorite part is, and what it was like to repair an old building. She replied, “Owning a business is demanding. It takes a lot of time and attention to detail. My favorite thing about owning the business is meeting new people and making new friends. Purchasing an old building and learning about its history has been fascinating. We have enjoyed learning about the history of the building, finding memorabilia scattered throughout the building, and combining our personal styles with the historic charm of the building.”
When asked what is offered, she responded, “We believe we have created a unique brand, from the interior decorations to the coffee menu that includes everything from Lattes and Cappuccinos, to Loaded Teas, Smoothies, Frappes, and Genoa Sodas (aka Dirty Sodas) and other specialty drinks. We also offer fresh-baked sourdough cinnamon rolls, sourdough bread, FREE waffles on a stick, biscuits and gravy, and a variety of muffins. We have ice cream too, fresh and local from Rokeyroad Creamery in Sabetha. We also host a variety of kid-friendly events such as cookie decorating, pumpkin decorating, painting, visiting with Santa, and more!”
Old Guys Brew Coffee Shop in Pawnee City is open Monday through Friday from 7-11 a.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. Watch for extended hours on social media as we get closer to summer.
