I had the pleasure of interviewing Elaine Mullin, a Pawnee City salon owner with almost 17 years of experience, who shared her journey, challenges, and advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.

When asked about the difficulties of owning a salon, she laughed and said she loves to tell people she is “the world's worst boss” because she doesn’t like taking days off. Although this year, she has done better at giving herself a break sometimes. Beyond that, the most significant difficulties lie in the behind-the-scenes responsibilities, such as taxes and insurance on the building.

As she approaches retirement, she hopes to remain involved with the Pawnee City Chamber of Commerce. One of her favorite things to do is make snacks and serve them throughout the week, just one of the ways she gives back to the community.

Finally, she gave some advice for those starting their own business. According to her, the most important thing is to make a schedule and stick to it. Don’t tell customers one thing and then be closed when they show up.

Thank you, Elaine, for allowing us to interview you and learn more about owning a business.
