On Thursday, April 24, Brian Maher, the Nebraska State Commissioner of Education, visits Pawnee City Public School to talk to the students. Prior to his visit, teachers and students made a list of questions they would like to ask Commissioner Maher.

Commissioner Maher gave a brief speech to PK-12 students and faculty. He shared experiences from his life that he felt would help students grow academically. He talked about his three kids. They all excelled athletically, playing D1 sports and his son played football for the Dallas Cowboys. He also mentioned how they all excelled academically. However, he pointed out one of his daughters stood out in her academic achievements. He explained how she received a full ride to a D1 university where she competed athletically. However, her college was free due to her outstanding academics. He said she excelled the most academically because she read all the time. His big piece of advice was to read as much as possible. He said it will help you flourish academically and as a person.

After his speech, he was given a list of questions the students and faculty made. He read and answered many questions such as, “What did you do before you were the Commisioner of Education,” “What stands out to you in a good way from the schools you visit,” and, “Why did you want to become the Commissioner of Education?”

Thank you, Commissioner Maher, for visiting Pawnee City Public School!
