On Tuesday, April 8, Pawnee City students and staff were split into groups to help clean up around town for Earth Day. Mr. Robertson’s group was responsible for painting the curbs downtown. Some of the other groups helped with cleaning up the highway, pulling weeds at the nursing home, picking up sticks, and putting mulch around the trees at North Park and VanHorne Park. They also put the picnic tables together for the fairgrounds.
Mr. Kluck and the Student Council were responsible for organizing this year's Earth Day cleanup. When asked about Earth Day, he said, “There are always problems that come up. Sometimes, there's not enough work at a location. Sometimes, there's too much and I don't have enough students at a place. Things change rapidly, and it's difficult to alter plans at the last minute. But students and teachers do a good job of adapting. I split the groups up randomly, and I think it went well in some ways. It's always nice to do something for the community and to be outside helping things look nice. At the same time, this year was especially difficult because we definitely had too little work for the amount of student workers we had working. We were supposed to work for about 3 hours, and most groups were done in less than 2. Next year, we need to address some of these issues and come up with a better plan for Earth Day. ”
The students and staff can’t wait to do it again next year because it’s how we help the community.
