Opportunity for Sophomores

The fifth grade is partnering with Mary Moser from the Nebraska Extension Office and the Nebraska Game and Parks for their annual trout project. They have been doing this for 4 or 5 years.

Mr. Hadley Sejkora describes this project by saying, “Trout in the Classroom is a program by the Nebraska Game and Parks. It partners with classrooms around the state of Nebraska to grow trout and learn about Nebraska's waterways and fish species. Mary Moser visits our class weekly for trout lessons and activities. The class received the trout eggs early to mid-January, depending on when they were hatched from the hatchery. The fifth graders take care of the trout until we release them at Schramm Aquarium in mid-April, and are still in the fingerling stage when we release them.”

The fifth grade also participated in dissecting and examining adult trout as part of this project.

Mr. Sejkora shared, “For the dissection, the Game and Parks gave us 10 adult trout to dissect. The students are able to work in pairs to dissect the fish and observe the internal and external anatomy of a rainbow trout. The dissection was led by Mary Moser.”

The fifth grade released the trout on April 11 and were also able to go fishing that day.
