On Wednesday, Sept. 27, schools from Pawnee, Richardson, and Johnson Counties come to the fairgrounds to learn about Ag Safety. The County Extension Office hosted an Ag Awareness Day to show the 3rd and 4th grade students how to be safe when they are farming. Students learned about drones, corn and soybeans, farm equipment - fertilizer, First Aid, dirt and erosion, and several animals: dairy, poultry, goats and sheep, swine, and one cow with a hole in its stomach to show how it digests food.
When asked about the day Mrs. Moser said, “This was the first year we hosted the Ag Literacy Festival in Pawnee. Kaytlyn Kennedy, the Extension Educator for Richardson County, has held it in Humboldt in the past.”
She continued, “The grades that came were all of the 3rd and 4th grade classes from all of those counties. We invited schools from the 4 southern counties (Pawnee, Johnson, Nemaha, and Otoe). Next year, we will rotate to a different county to host. We will evaluate what sessions were a huge success and what activities we can change or add to keep the youth engaged and learning about the agriculture in our state.”
The adults who were there that day said it was a great experience for the kids. Mrs. Moser concluded, “Even though the students live in a rural community, they aren’t very familiar with the agricultural products found and produced in Nebraska.”
