Huts

On August 25, the sophomores make huts in English class to resemble the shelters in The Lord of the Flies. The project started after the class read chapter three, when the boys made a shelter to protect themselves on the island. Students chose their groups and brainstormed ways to create a hut suitable for the conditions in the book. They were given 30 minutes to use sticks, grass, mud, and leaves to construct their forts.

Elementary teachers were encouraged to bring their students in to vote on the sturdiest, most likely to keep out the rain, best beasty defense, most creative, and the best overall. All teachers and students, not including sophomores, were also invited to vote.

The overall winners were Anna Koster and Morgann Friedly. Larkyn Vlcek and Layla Fetherkile also won a few categories.

When asked if the project was successful, Mrs. Bloss said, “It’s a great activity to work on teamwork, persuasion, and creativity that isn’t necessary to read the book, but sure is fun.”
