Cell Phones for Survivors

By Caetlen Gyhra, Junior

More than 60% of domestic violence incidents happen at home. Almost 3 million men are victims of physical assault in the United States and 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. These facts are according to the Safe Horizons website, which is the nation’s leading victim assistance organization.
Safe Horizons is launching a national campaign called  Cell Phones for Survivors. Cell Phones for Survivors is a nationwide donation plan to help women in violent relationships. Joslyn Sharpe is leading the donation efforts in Pawnee City. She stated “I chose this one because I thought it was really cool using something everyone has to help save someone’s life. It is important to me because domestic violence victims are something I feel very strongly about helping.”
You can donate any old phones you have, working or not, at the Union Bank, Niders, Pete’s Pharmacy, Elaine’s Hair Salon, and the Pawnee City School. The drive will last from January 1st to February 1st. The phones will be sent to SecondWave Recycling where they will clear everything from your phone. The money, they collect from the phones, will be donated to Safe Horizons, which is use to help provide bedding, food, rent payments and much more to domestic violence victims to help them get back on their feet. Joslyn’s goal is to collect at least 30 cell phones.
