Success in Kentucky

By Caetlen Gyhra, Junior

This year was the first time Pawnee City FFA has been to Nationals for a competition. The Agronomy team had a lot of success with the team placing 9th overall in the nation. Hayden Meyer and Carly Hunzeker were awarded gold medals, and Brooke Bowhay and Clayton Branek were awarded silver medals. The Farm Business Management team, placing in the top half, received silver. Collin Moser, Shayla Wissler, and Colton Schaardt each were awarded individual silver medals.
On Wednesday the Agronomy team competed in the team activity, which involved selecting and budgeting for a three crop rotation for a field with many weed problems such as glyphosate resistant weeds. On Thursday, the Agronomy team competed in the individual section of the contest. The individual contest involves identifying machinery, identifying seeds and plants for both weeds and crops, answering questions about soils monoliths and maps, identifying insects including life cycles, mouth parts and destruction, and plant diseases with their cause and destruction, grain grading, seed selection and judging classes of hay and beans.
On Wednesday the Farm Business Management team competed in individual exams testing them on financial statements, enterprise budget, cash flow planning, marketing, income tax, investment analysis, risk management, farm business organization, analysis of the farm business, family living, input/resource substitution, and business planning. On Thursday, the Farm Business Management team competed in the team activity which focused on Agritourism.
Three members also received their American Degree, the highest degree an FFA member can receive. Less than half of one percent of FFA members receive this honor. To receive the American Degree, you have to receive your State Degree and have taken three high school agriculture classes or two high school classes and one college class. In addition to that, members have to earn and productively invest at least $7,500 or $1,500 and worked at least 2,250 hours beyond scheduled school hours through their SAEs. Pawnee City members who received this honor were Sydney Hunzeker, Jill Nightingale, and Jake Wissler.
