A Dinner with the Heros

By Alexa Cline, Senior

Veteran’s Day may have passed, but it’s never too late to show your patriotism.
On the 9th of February, Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy winners from area schools met at the American Legion Hall to share their writings and a meal with the community. There was barely an open seat in the house, proving just how popular this event has become over the years.

The first writing contest (The Patriot’s Pen) is only open to 7th and 8th graders. The pre-selected theme or message of their writing was “Why I Appreciate Veterans”. From the junior high, Devon Gilmore placed third, Thomas Smyth placed second, and Braden Kobza was awarded with first. Each student was given a varying amount of money depending on their ranking, as well as a medal, and a Youth Essay Certificate of Merit.

This led into the Voice of Democracy portion of the evening, a contest similar to the Patriot’s Pen, but only open to high school students. Their theme was “Why Veterans are Important”. In this, Jordan Porter placed third, Clayton Schaardt placed second, and Miranda Branek was awarded with first. These students also received money, a medal, and a Youth Essay Certificate of Merit.

Their writings will also be sent off to districts to compete against the work of other Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy winners, hopefully earning more recognition for themselves and their cause.
